Day Two’s Building Devotion – The Kumbal Perahera in Kandy
The second night of the Kumbal Perahera is more sacred. Amid the rolling of drums and the measured movements of the dancers, the devotees, enthralled by the haunting music, close in again with renewed expectancy. The second lineup is a continuation of a spiritual cleansing, fortifying the blessings of protection placed over families the night before.
Some locals say that if the Perahera passes in front of your house, it will leave multiple layers of blessings, like placing shields, upon your home, children, and businesses. This is their opportunity to get this spiritual grace of the Dalada Perahera if they missed being there on the first day. For pilgrims who have journeyed on foot from faraway villages, this is the day of arrival, and an intensely personal offering to the Sacred Tooth Relic.
The procession snakes through the heart of the city, gathering community devotion. It’s not purely a cultural event; it’s a holy reunion of people and faith.
